Frequently Asked Questions
▼ How long does it take to analyze a
sample?
Results are typically available one to two working days after they are received by the laboratory. Occasionally, samples are held an extra day to verify quality assurance results.
Some methods for sample preparation or analysis require extended times, so results may take longer. The longer time requirement applies to certain analysis for environmental samples (wastewater, biosolids, etc.), fertilizer materials, fat or oil samples, liquid feed samples.
▼ What should I use for a sample
container?
Soils: Lined paper or cloth bags available from the laboratory for multiple samples; quart-size plastic zipper-lock bag for single samples.
Feeds & forages: Half-gallon or gallon plastic zipper-lock bag
Plant tissue: Paper bags; do NOT use plastic bags
Drinking water: Request sterile, treated containers from the laboratory.
Irrigation or livestock water: Clean plastic or polyethylene bottle.
Manure: Heavy-weight plastic zipper-lock bag for dry or semi-solid sample; heavy-weight polyethylene bottle for slurry, liquid manure, or wastewater samples.
Environmental solids or wastewater: Request containers from the laboratory; specific tests require specific containers and preservatives.
Fertilizer or lime: Pint-size plastic zipper-lock bags for dry materials; heavy-weight plastic bottle for liquids.
